Remembering Donald Cloudsley, '42

Few Bennett Alumni have been as loyal or served their alma mater as faithfully as did Don Cloudsley who died on November 22, 2012 after having been hospitalized as a result of a fall the previous June. Don served on the Board of Directors for many years as a Founding Member, giving generously of his time, talent and resources. He chaired the Annual Brunch for many years, as well as the Library Committee. He was an enthusiastic mentor, going well beyond the usual one hour a week to help Bennett students. Even after he began using a walker, he faithfully continued to attend Board Meetings, despite inclement weather.

Sissy Van Slyke, who knew Don since childhood, commented that he was a very determined, hard-working leader, whether at the Erie County Library; Rotary Club; Central Park Methodist Church or Bennett Alumni Board. Above all she observed, “He was a very fine gentleman.”

Marilyn Wittman commented, “What I admired most about Don was the understated way in which he did his selfless deeds. I am sure that he did things for Bennett students known only to him and the recipients of his generosity. What we did know were selfless acts done with the kind of heartfelt compassion that knew no boundaries.”

Don will be badly missed by the Bennett community.
